A device attached to the system is not functioning
Scenario: There are instances when you attempt to connect to your Windows Server via RDP Remote Desktop, you encounter the error:
This issue would normally occur if you have ‘clipboard’ ticketed(enabled) in mstsc > option > Local Resources > clipboard utility while trying to take RDP to the server or if you have enabled mapping of your local network drive on the server.
Unchecked the Clipboard resource then clicked Connect
If that doesnt work then, if you have any alternative user login for RDP, login using that user and then open Task Manager > go to ‘Users’ tab and Log off ‘Administrator’ user.
Lastly, if that does work either due to lack of administrative rights, then consider rebooting the server, it should resolve the issue.
Post login, double check if there is any network drive mapping, if yes, make sure to disable, ‘reconnect at sign-in’ as if you are logging in from a different Machine, the network drive will not work and you will end up receive the above error.
Also, do check event viewer logs, if you see following event in the Windows Logs > System
“The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client” Event ID 56
You can follow the steps mentioned here to fix the issue.
